House of Dun Mausoleum, Angus

FUNDERS & PARTNERS: National Trust for Scotland
LOCATION: Montrose, Angus

We conducted standing building survey of this B-listed mausoleum on the House of Dun estate, owned by the National Trust for Scotland. Our desk-based research into archives and historical sources -- combined with laser scanning, photography and analysis of the fabric -- led to a new interpretation of its history. It began as a medieval parish church and was remodelled and extensively repaired in the 18th century, when walls were raised and windows enlarged. In the mid 19th century it was partly dismantled and the remainder converted to a mausoleum for the Erskines of Dun: walls were levelled and raised, another burial chamber was built, barrels vaults were inserted and new architectural features added strong Gothic notes. Our report details and illustrates the evidence for its history, assesses the significance of the heritage assets and proposes strategies for conserving significance and addressing the building's conservation management issues.
