Wemyss Caves Visualisation
FUNDERS & PARTNERS: Historic Scotland, Fife Council, The Crown Estate, University of St Andrews, SCAPE Trust, Save Wemyss Ancient Caves Society, Northlight Heritage
LOCATION: East Wemyss, Fife
Wemyss Caves contain the largest collection of Pictish carvings in Scotland, made over 1500 years ago. The caves are under threat from coastal erosion and The SCAPE Trust, along with SWACS, are leading efforts to record and protect this key piece of coastal cultural heritage. The carvings in Jonathan's Cave - including what may be the earliest image of a boat in Scotland - were recorded using a range of cutting-edge digital recording techniques, including Laser Scanning, Structure From Motion Photography, Structured Light Scanning and Reflectance Transformation Imaging. We received a Special Commendation as part of the project team for the British Archaeological Awards 2014 Best Community Engagement Archaeology Project.
