Wee Dig Provan Hall
FUNDERS & PARTNERS: Heritage Lottery Fund, National Trust for Scotland, Friends of Provan Hall, Glasgow City Council, Glasgow and Clyde Valley Green Network Partnership, Glasgow Buildings Preservation Trust
LOCATION: Easterhouse, Glasgow
A former hunting lodge for the Bishops of Glasgow, Provan Hall is one of the oldest buildings in the city, dating to around 1450. Our ‘Wee Dig’ pilot project was held over Doors Open Day week and involved local volunteers, over 60 schoolchildren from local primary and secondary schools, and students from John Wheatley College in the excavation of farm buildings and gardens around Provan Hall. We also explored medieval foods as a way of bringing together the cultural and natural heritage and engaging with harder-to-reach groups in Easterhouse. This opened up discussions of sustainability, seasonality, health and wellbeing and of how food production and land use have changed within the wider Seven Lochs Wetlands Park area.
