Digging In
FUNDERS & PARTNERS: Heritage Lottery Fund, The Robertson Trust, Covenant Fund, University of Glasgow, Glasgow City Council
LOCATION: Pollok Country Park, Glasgow
This experimental reconstruction of World War I trench systems in the heart of Glasgow is a hub for learning and outdoor research about the conflict. Through innovative events, school visits and digital content, Digging In facilitates visitors' imaginative engagement with the historical reality of trench warfare and its vast impact on individuals, communities and society - from medical innovations to radical politics, artistic responses and new roles for women. Volunteers from local, university and Armed Forces veteran communities contribute to many aspects of the project - from practical on-site work to helping deliver events and learning activities.
Digging In, along with its sister projects War & Peas and Wings to War, have so far engaged over 5,000 schoolchildren in our active learning programme and welcome over 6,000 visitors to events and open days. Over 100 volunteers and interns have contributed their time to the projects.
